To find the right balance and texture for my textile wall hanging pieces I had to experiment with different weaving techniques, materials and colours to achieve a balanced yet textural look for the final piece. I began by searching through a range of colours and found wool that varied from solid colours, to ombres, to mottled colours. I also noted that their was wool with varying thicknesses and textures, so I considered this in the selection of my materials. This step is vital as you need to have different textures for the textile wall hanging to reflect an art piece from a natural environment. If all the materials are the same thickness and texture, it will also make the wall hanging seem flat and untextured. The addition and variation in thickness and texture is more inviting than a flat piece of material sitting against a wall. I also experimented with different materials for the warp threads of the weaving loom for the textile products. I began with a cotton tape but found that it did not fit nicely into the grooves of the weaving loom and it became twisted and scrunched on the warp threads. After realising this, I attempted again with a cotton thread and it fit much nicer into the loom grooves and ran smooth and clean warp threads. This resulted in a smooth canvas for me to weave the wool through and resulted in a nice smooth woven wall hanging.

Before I began creating my designs for the Madison Collection, I had to experiment with the base fabric to ensure that it fit with the aesthetic I was striving for and it worked functionally for the overall design.
I began by sewing a few different types of stitches such as the back stitch, straight stitch and the french knot stitch [the three main stitches I used for my designs] on a base fabric of canvas, purchased from my local Spotlight store. This fabric had a weave that was not extremely tight or extremely loose and held the stitches well for the design and it did not stretch or sag when the embroidery hoop was attached to it. The canvas fabric was also cost effective and came in a wide range of colours as well as the neutral colour I needed for my collection aesthetic. Overall, the functionality of this material encouraged me to use it for my design pieces. |
